Verity Fisher is the National Lead for Healthcare and Physiotherapy Manager at National Star in Cheltenham, UK, where she has worked for the organisation since 2012. Graduating with a First-Class Honours degree in Physiotherapy, she initially worked in the NHS developing a particular interest in Neurology and Respiratory care, including Intensive Care. Since then, Verity has developed her specialism working within Neurology, in particular the field of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and complex medical conditions. She has been involved with the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group, looking into better provision for those with ABI, as well as the UK Postural Care National Working Group aiming to provide a standardised strategy for those with Profound Multiple Learning Difficulties. Verity has completed a range of postgraduate training and is a qualified teacher with specialist interest in supporting young people with disabilities.
For the past six years Verity has led National Star trips, both within and outside the UK, including initiating and running ski trips, which have become an annual event. This involves leading and managing multidisciplinary staff teams and ensuring the safety and welfare of students. Since January 2016 over fifty learners from National Star have travelled to Andorra with the BBC twice filming the group. Students experience the freedom of skiing and implement the skills they have learnt in physiotherapy, education and their wider college life in a very different environment. Verity has developed links with multiple companies, including specialists who have supported the trips and assisted with product development.
Verity has previously presented at disability awareness conferences including at the “I Am Able Conference” in Antigua in 2019. Since becoming the National Lead for Healthcare at National Star she has helped to shape the support of learners with complex and rare medical needs to ensure they have access to the healthcare and education they need. Verity’s philosophy is enabling young people with disabilities to have access to opportunities so that they can overcome barriers and reach their full potential.
